How to tell it's a spring

  • You heard a sharp bang or gunshot-loud snap — could be from the garage, could have been mistaken for something outside.
  • The opener runs but the door doesn't move, or moves an inch and stops.
  • The door feels catastrophically heavy when you try to lift it by hand — because it is. A two-car door with no spring assist weighs 250 to 400 pounds.
  • You can see a visible gap in the torsion spring above the door — a two- to three-inch break where the spring separated.
  • Cables have slipped off the drums — often happens right after the spring goes.

Do not try to lift the door manually. A snapped spring means the door has zero counter-balance. A door that heavy coming down on someone is a serious injury. Wait for a tech.

Torsion vs extension springs

Two systems are common in Green Bay houses. Torsion springs mount horizontally on a shaft above the door and account for probably 80% of installs done in the last 25 years. Extension springs run parallel to the horizontal tracks on either side of the door and were more common in older builds through the 1990s.

Torsion is safer, lasts longer, and is quieter. Extension is cheaper up front but wears faster and is more dangerous when it fails — a snapped extension spring can fly across the garage. Standard-cycle vs high-cycle springs

Springs are rated in cycles. One cycle equals one open + one close. Standard-cycle springs are rated for around 10,000 cycles. High-cycle springs are rated for 20,000, 25,000, or 50,000 depending on the wire and coil spec.

Rule of thumb: a family that uses the garage as their main entrance opens and closes the door 3 to 5 times a day. That's 1,100 to 1,800 cycles a year. A standard-cycle spring lasts 6 to 9 years under that load. High-cycle springs are the upgrade we recommend when we're replacing springs on a busy house, or when we're doing an insulated door install and want the spring to outlast the door.

Why springs break more often in a Green Bay winter

  1. We arrive and confirm the spring size we need. Wire diameter, inside diameter, and length matter — the wrong spring is worse than no spring.

  3. We install the new spring or springs. Dual springs on a two-car door means both get replaced even if only one broke — they were wound at the same time and the second is close behind.
  4. We inspect the cables, drums, and center bearing. Cables that were straining under a bad spring often show fray damage.
  5. We wind and set the tension, then cycle the door 5 to 10 times to confirm balance.

Typical time on-site: 45 to 90 minutes on a standard two-car door, assuming we have the right spring on the truck. Longer if we're pairing with cable or drum replacement.

Spring replacement FAQs

Should I replace both springs if only one broke?

Yes. On a dual-spring setup both springs were wound to the same tension on the same day. When the first one snaps, the second is at or past its rated cycle count and will often fail within weeks. Replacing both saves you a second service call.

Can I just replace a spring myself?

Physically possible, actually dangerous. Torsion spring winding requires the right winding bars and a lot of respect for stored energy. Most spring DIY injuries come from wrong-sized winding bars slipping under load. It's not the repair we recommend doing yourself.

How long do springs last in Green Bay?

A standard-cycle spring on a normally-used residential door typically lasts 6 to 9 years here. Cold-weather cycling is hard on them so the low end of that range is realistic. High-cycle upgrades can double it.
