Allouez is one of the oldest continuously settled places in Wisconsin — the name comes from the 1600s Jesuit mission at the mouth of the Fox River. The village today is a stable, mostly built-out east-side residential community of about 14,000, and the housing stock reflects its decades of growth: pre-war bungalows near the river, 1950s and 1960s ranches along Webster, and mid-century capes on Riverside Dr. That's a lot of original single-car garages with extension springs that are pushing 40 or 50 years old and are past their design life.

- Webster Ave corridor. Post-war and mid-century single-family. Attached single-car garages with extension springs still riding overhead. Conversion to torsion is a common upgrade — safer, longer-lived, quieter.
- Riverside Dr along the Fox. Older established residential with detached single-car garages behind the house. Some carriage-style wood originals still hanging on.
- Near St. Norbert Abbey and the golf club. Mixed stock, some larger lots with detached two-car outbuildings.
- Off S Webster near the Green Bay Correctional Institution. Mostly ranch-style with attached garages, aging original hardware.
Extension-to-torsion spring conversion
If your Allouez garage still has the two long springs stretched along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door — those are extension springs. They're the older design, and while they work, torsion is what's specified on modern doors for good reasons. Torsion springs mount above the door on a shaft, wind rather than stretch, and if one breaks the failure mode is a lot less dramatic than a whipping extension spring. On aging Allouez homes with original hardware, we'll often quote a torsion conversion as part of the spring replacement — it's a modest additional cost and a permanent upgrade. See the spring page.
Single-car door options
A lot of Allouez garages are still the original single-car opening — typically 8 feet or 9 feet wide. If you want to keep the single-car footprint, we install standard 8x7 or 9x7 sectional insulated steel doors on the existing frame. If the opening is structurally sound and you're doing enough of a renovation to justify it, we can also widen a single opening to a two-car 16x7 — that's not a garage-door-only job, it's carpentry and header work first, but we coordinate with the trades who handle the structural side.
Access and setback
Older Allouez lots often have short driveways with the garage close to the street. That's actually good for us — quick truck access, no long approach, no parking maze. The tighter constraint here is detached garages behind the house with narrow single-track driveways along the side yard. Tell us the layout on the intake call and we'll bring the right truck.

Is it worth replacing a single-car door with a two-car opening?
Sometimes. Depends on what's above the opening structurally, whether the driveway supports two vehicles side by side, and what you value. A two-car opening runs materially more than replacing the door in the same frame — new header, new tracks, new door, and often building permit work. We can look at it and give you a real comparison.
My extension springs still work. Do I actually need to convert to torsion?
Not if they're functional. If they're being replaced anyway because one broke, the incremental cost to convert the hardware over is modest and you get a safer, quieter, longer-lived system. If the extensions are fine, we don't push a conversion for its own sake.
Can you handle detached garages behind the house?
Yes. Most of Allouez's older stock includes detached garages. We service them the same as attached — spring, opener, panel, and full replacement. Access is usually straightforward.
Do you match the character of an older home?
Where possible, yes. Carriage-style steel doors reproduce a traditional look and hold up well through Wisconsin winters. If you want an authentic wood door, that's available too at a higher price point.
